“Bridge to nowhere” dropped

The “bridge to nowhere” project in Alaska was cut on Wednesday in what some are calling a victory for fiscal conservatives.

I’m confused though, since they’re still giving the $230–million to Alaska to, uh, do whatever they want with it just-don’t-build-a-bridge.

This means that not only do we not actually “save” the money in the budget, but irritating Ted Stevens (yes, the same Ted Stevens who shut down Maria Cantwell when she tried to get the oil executives to swear in for their testimony) is now back-pedaling on whether he’ll resign over the debacle. He had initially said that he’d resign from the Senate if the bridge was cut. Now he’s saying (my paraphrase here): “hell, we’re still getting the money in Alaska so I guess I’ll stay”.
