Tax Refund vs Tax Return

It’s getting to be that time of year, so have you gotten your tax return yet? What’s that you say? You filed your tax refund the other day, but you haven’t gotten your return yet?

I agree… nobody would say that last sentence, because it’s so obviously wrong. But for some reason I always hear people talking about getting their tax return. They are generally very excited about it (and they talk about what they’re planning to spend it on, so it’s pretty clear they don’t mean “getting my tax return back from the accountant so that I can file it)

  • You fill out and file the various IRS forms that make up a tax return.
  • If you overpaid your taxes last year, you will get a tax refund.

    hi!

i’m not here to promote certain services, but you can also have a tax agent do the tax rebate filing for you , they do take commission, but it does take a lot of the hassle away…

It’s a fair point, Paul… but in general, I don’t imagine that’s what folks are thinking (gee, I can have my tax preparer give me a cash advance loan on my refund and arrange it during the same visit they do my filing, therefore it’s a “return” that’s giving me the cash). :)
